Key Times And Roles
You can be involved in any or many of the activities at the times below. Please note that the roles list is *not* exhaustive and the times are not yet definitive.
All weekend
Info-zone: public facing, giving info and taking money for the activities and last minute sign-ups. Efficient, friendly, enthusiastic. No fitness required! This year the Adventure Village will have brilliant public appeal with a live stage and big screen as well as various adventure activities.
Event promotion: Sell the story! Motivated smiling individuals to deliver posters and hand out around the city, and encourage the public to make their way down to the Adventure Village. This role ideally will extend to the weekend and week before the event.
Event Village activities: Again public facing, you may be asked to operate the mad-ass bungee run, help with the trampoline and concession stands, or perform general support duties like being an "info-runner" for the MC or putting up ad hoc promo posters.
Onsite and offsite branding: Fit, savvy, strong people to set up branding from our sponsors at the Adventure Village base and move branding around the course. Good navigation skills and full driving licence required.
Event Concessions Helpers: Peoples to look after all the queries and requests from the concessions and partners at the Adventure Village.
Thursday and Friday pre-event set-up & Monday post-event deconstruction
We need a crew of strong, savvy, hard workers who enjoy a spot of site construction (marquees, tents, fencing, signage). Times are 8am-late with beers at 8pm. It? intense, but we love you for it and you?l get a few extra perks if you can help out on the Thursday and Friday too. On Monday we are looking for a deconstruction team of any willing strong workers! Again, you?l be rewarded for your efforts!
Saturday morning
0830-1100 Kayak and abseil refresher - course instructors for competitors: Can you help?
0930-1530 Competitor registration - Crew to check kit, take registration, process numbers, answer questions
Competitor admin: accounting and admin staff to help manage the entries, refresher course sign-ups, queries, and team registrations. You don't have to be fit; just efficient, very patient and friendly! It's great fun because the teams are generally buzzing with excitement (and sometimes confusion) and it's your job to channel that into a sense of order...!
Sat night and Sunday
Race Crew: happy, patient, enthusiastic types to look after designated checkpoints, giving (or actively not giving!) information as briefed by the Crew coordinator. This is a great job for superheroes. Competitors LOVE to see a crew member when they're tired and bewildered, but they tend to take them for granted at all other times (ie when focused on the racing). The reward is the knowledge that you're a key link in the chain to making the race run successfully (and at the after-party when you get a big cheer and maybe a drink from the competitors!) It would be help to have a basic fitness - lots of standing, perhaps biking from one location to another....
Typical Crew activities will include:
- Helping to register competitors
- Undertaking kit checks
- Placing SPORTident boxes at checkpoints (and bringing them back in afterwards)
- Briefing competitors on what they will be doing at certain checkpoints
- Making sure teams ?ib in the SPORTident box when necessary
- Helping to ensure that the teams abide by the Race Rules
- Updating Rat Race HQ with info about the race and racers passing through
- Carrying bikes and kayaks
- Handing out water
- Cheering on and boosting morale
- Collecting any walking wounded
- Possibly administering basic First Aid
- Assisting our paramedics
- Being visible and available to anyone who requires assistance or help
- Clearing the checkpoint of any litter, lost property etc after the race has passed through
Water
There will be a fresh water supply ONLY at the Event Village - so be sure to BRING WATER BOTTLES or HYDRATION PACKS so that you can stock up with at least 2 LITRES OF WATER for the day, but ideally more. This is CRUCIAL and down to yourself to manage.
Equipment And Clothing
Please prepare for all weathers - British summer at its worst and best. Be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes, waterproofs AND sun cream, as well as a basic kit-list which will be recommended to you closer to the dates.
Further Information
Once you have registered with us, we will give you further information regarding roles, kit-list, accommodation, and timings. PLEASE do let us know immediately if there is any reason or problem that might mean you can't make it on the weekend; we will be depending on any crew vital support during the event and if you can't make it we need to know so that we can reallocate the roles and work.
If you've got this far, then well done, we look forward to having you on board. It'll be a blast.
